Chapter 17

OVER DINNER THE SENSUAL tension surrounding them was on high. In between bites, neither could subdue their heated gazes. It was torture sitting through the decadent dessert Julio sent to the table. Teresa had never been so happy in all her life when Pierce removed his credit card to pay the bill. It was torture waiting for the waiter to take his credit card, run it, and bring it back for his signature. After not seeing Pierce for two weeks, it was time for them to be alone. Teresa was past ready to go.

Neither of them bothered to put on gloves, their fingers intertwined on the stroll to the car. The heat of rising passion was enough to keep them warm in the blustery, winter night. When they reached Pierce’s vehicle, he planted a chaste kiss on Teresa’s lips.

“Man, why are you teasing me like that?” Teresa sighed against his mouth.

Pierce made a subtle nod to the left of the lot. “Surveillance camera.”

“Oh,” was all Teresa said, taking a step to the side to allow Pierce to open the door.

The couple made small talk on the drive back to Teresa’s place. Teresa didn’t mind though because earlier conversation was heavy bordering on oppressive. Yet, it made her want to open up to Pierce the way he had done with her. Would he think differently of her? See her as weak and pathetic?

All too soon they were on her block and Pierce was parking. On the sidewalk their footsteps echoed against the concrete. An automatic flood light came on when they reached the side door of the nursery school leading upstairs to the apartment. Teresa removed her keys from her pocket and inserted the blue key to open the bottom lock and then the bolt lock to the metal door. Until tonight, she'd never paid attention to the squeaky wooden steps that led to the apartment’s door.

At the top of the landing, she took her time inserting the pink key in the door leading into the living space. Pierce stood so close she could feel the rise and fall of his broad chest against her back. Dizzy with desire, Teresa leaned into his solid form wondering what it would be like to wake up every morning with him literally having her back.

The subtle scent of jasmine greeted them when they entered. Jeanette had a thing for plug-in room deodorizers. When Teresa asked her friend about it, she told her, “the smell puts me in a better mood if I’ve had a bad day.” Teresa's day hadn’t been out of the ordinary, however, as she inhaled the romantic aroma all she wanted was to upgrade to lover status with Pierce. Right then. Right now.

Pierce patiently waited for Teresa to shut and lock the door. The eight seconds it took to do the task took too long. He didn’t have the patience for them to remove their coats. Teresa let out a long, satisfied moan when their mouths connected, her fists grabbing the front of his unzipped leather jacket.
